Statement of Asylum
I've been working with Dr Kat Lewis of Undertow on a project to give voice to some of the asylum seekers within our community here in Margate, some of whom were threatened with being removed to the Bibby Stockholm. On Friday 21st June their statement, articulated as a piece of animated poetry and the outcome of a workshop with Kat, was projected onto the Turner Contemporary gallery in Margate.
Onlookers gathered to watch the projection which presented the outcome of the poetry workshop, alongside a reworking of the original to create a second summary piece in the mode of concrete poetry.
Statement of Asylum was an Undertow project funded by Artcry. This was a collaborative project, with various locally based people and organisations coming together to help share the voice of the asylum seekers from our community, and to record that event. Collaborators included; Kent Refugee Action Network (KRAN), Kent Poetry, Dan Thompson Studio, Pizza 2 Night, Marine Studios, Co-relate and IMIX.
