The Shop Front
I run a small studio space in Margate which I currently share with 2 other creative practitioners / educators on Northdown Road, the high street which runs through the Cliftonville area of Margate, parallel to the cliff top & sea.
We are occupying the space which was once the shop front & basement store/workshop of the building and as a result have a large shopfront window onto the street. Rather than a simply offering view of one or two people tapping away at a computer, we decided to use the shop window as a gallery space.
We’ve had the pleasure of showing a wide range of work to date and have enjoyed lots of interesting conversations with passers by who have stopped to look at the material on show. The level of engagement has been rewardingly high, and from right across the local community & visitors (this being a tourist town, albeit a resurgent one). As we’re now in the process of submitting a funding application to offer a more regular programme and to be able to provide material support to artists who would otherwise be unable to show their work, we’ve been looking back over past displays.
